LISTEN: A Dance For Three
Entanglement and the relations that weave the world.
“Entanglement is not a dance for two partners, it is a dance for three.”
Carlo Rovelli, Helgoland: The Strange and Beautiful Story of Quantum Physics
A feel a quiet sense of achievement with this piece. It’s a simple little piano composition, but it has always held something. And it has gathered meaning while I’ve worked on it, representing something of the wondrous struggles of life as a parent, husband, friend, human…the ‘relations that weave the world’, giving it meaning.
When I was recording this final version, I had already been recording some synth experiments that day. I thought I’d muted them all before working on this distinctly non-synthy tune, but one of them came in during the middle section and…well it sounded lovely actually.
So I wrote a proper synth part and it brought a dreamy warmth to the piece.
Then…I wondered what it would sound like played backwards through a Space Echo (I wonder this about most things…it’s my favourite sound, I think). And that became the outro on this final version.
It has made the whole thing feel more epic than the simple ‘Lullaby piano’ that it started as. And I thought it would be easy to finish writing, record and mix. But it was actually really challenging.
Sometimes the things that seem most simple are the hardest. There is a wider truth in that, I think.
